Marie Smyth has researched the role young people play in conflicts in Northern Ireland, South Africa, and the Middle East. She joins us to discuss the political influence of young combatants on military and paramilitary groups. Smyth has worked with Olara Otunnu, the UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. She has also been affiliated with the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland and with the U.S. Institute for Peace.
