Teachers Recognized for Excellence

Two Chicago Public School teachers got a big surprise today. They each received a $25,000 check for excellence in teaching, to spend however they want.

Samantha Godden-Chmielowicz didn’t know she was getting an award when she came to school this morning. The French teacher at Carl Schurz High School received the Milken National Educator Award.

CHMIELOWICZ: It was just an amazing feeling to, to be recognized that way, to know that other people think that highly of me.

Philanthropist Lowell Milken helped create the teaching prize.

MILKEN: We don’t support our talented teachers to the degree we should. We know the pay is not remotely equal to the importance of the job. The foundation has given nearly $60 million to more than 2,000 teachers.

For Chicago Public Radio, I’m Jessy Bradish.
