A deaf woman recently accused a Bolingbrook, Illinois, restaurant of refusing her service because she couldn’t place an order over the drive-through speaker. Karen Putz says she’s a regular at the Steak ‘n Shake and normally orders with the window attendant because she lip reads to communicate.

Company officials have since acknowledged their mistake and offered Putz a personal apology. They also released a statement saying they are increasing awareness and sensitivity among their employees. But according to contributor Beth Finke the restaurant chain isn’t the only group of service providers that need a little lesson in understanding.

Beth Finke is a Chicago writer and a contributor to Eight Forty-Eight. She’s also the author of the new children’s book, Hanni and Beth: Safe & Sound.
