Nuclear Power Opponents Decry Industry's Eco-Friendly Message

The nuclear energy industry is in Chicago this week holding a conference on green energy. Industry leaders say nuclear power could be a way to fight climate change. But others disagree.

This week's meeting in many ways is part of the on-going rallying cry by the industry for more nuclear power in the US. The Bush administration has tried to push this along with billions of dollars in loan guarantees. But David Kraft says nuclear energy is far from safe, or green. Kraft is director of the Chicago-based Nuclear Energy Information Service.

KRAFT: There's the nuclear waste issue, they have no place to put high-level radioactive waste that's environmentally responsible. There's the nuclear proliferation issue, everywhere that commercial nuclear power has gone on the planet, nuclear weapons eventually follow.

Kraft also says the industry is ignoring renewable sources of energy like wind. Meantime, John Rowe, head of Chicago-based Exelon, says there's no way to address the issue of climate change without a substantial investment in nuclear power.
