President George W. Bush has signed a supplemental spending bill today that includes money for two Illinois laboratories.
Fermi National Accelerator and Argonne National Laboratories will get some part of a $62.5 million allotment. That money means the labs can keep staff. Cash-strapped Fermilab was about to lay off between 80 and 100 workers. Spokeswoman Judith Jackson says research using the lab's particle accelerator, the Tevatron, also can continue.
JACKSON: But in another couple of years, we'll be turning off the Tevatron, so it's very important that we are actively engaged in the process of building our future.
Fermilab and Argonne also will get funding from the National Science Foundation for critical research.
