Environmental Group Sues BP Over Refinery
Produced by City Room on Thursday, July 10, 2008

 |
An environmental group says BP needs a more stringent air permit for its expansion of a refinery in Whiting, Indiana. The Natural Resources Defense Council filed a federal lawsuit against the energy company yesterday. Ann Alexander is an attorney for the NRDC in Chicago.
ALEXANDER: The permit that they got was based on BP's assertion that they're not going to be increasing their emissions in connection with this expansion, but if you actually go and add up all of their emissions from this expansion project, they have a very big increase.
BP spokesman Tom Mueller says the lawsuit is part of a "coordinated attack" by environmentalists on refinery expansions.
MUELLER: This strategy seriously threatens the energy security of the United States.
Mueller says BP's expansion plan complies with all state and federal regulations. Both the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved the current air permit.

According to the permit application, BP's expansion will actually lower emissions of REGULATED pollutants. In my mind this is good.
