Suburbs Get Rid of Gun Ban

The country's first handgun ban is about to become history. Morton Grove will drop its 1981 ordinance at a village board meeting Monday. The action is a response to the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down Washington D.C.'s handgun ban. Village Administrator Joe Wade says it's a change the northern suburb can live with.

WADE: There's an old Mark Twain quote. He once characterized the town as a hotbed of rest. Morton Grove was a quiet town before the handgun ban and I expect it'll be a quiet town after this ordinance is repealed.

Wade says Morton Grove decided to drop the ban a day after the high court's ruling. Earlier this week the North Shore community of Wilmette repealed its law against handgun ownership at home. In contrast, Chicago says it will fight lawsuits filed against the city's handgun ban.
