City Cops May Have to Staff Peace March
Produced by Rob Wildeboer on Tuesday, February 10, 2009

A peace march marking the anniversary of the start of the Iraq war will likely go forward despite objections from the city of Chicago.
The city sought to deny a march permit based on the fact that peace activists wanted to march the same weekend as two major St. Patrick's Day parades in Chicago. The city argued that a third event on that same weekend would stretch the resources of the police department which would have to staff all three.
But a Cook County judge is leaning towards peace protestors because of a technicality. The ordinance controlling march permits requires the city to give denials in written form and a notice by fax or phone.
Chicago law department spokesperson Jennifer Hoyle says the city was a day or two late on sending out the fax which means the march application is approved by default. Hoyle says the city could still go to the Illinois appeals court but lawyers have to assess how likely a victory there might be.
