Federal prosecutors attempted to show the dangers of political hiring today in the trial of Chicago's former commissioner of streets and sanitation.
When Denise Garcia Cortez applied for a city job as a driver she listed her previous work experience which included working in the office of Illinois representative Edward Acevedo but nothing about driving.
Wearing a bright orange sweater with a city of Chicago logo, Cortez testified this afternoon at the trial of Al Sanchez whose accused of giving city jobs to people who did political work for HDO, the Hispanic Democratic Organization.
Prosecutors asked Cortez about several accidents she's had on the job including one that severely injured a co-worker. Defense attorney Tom Breen has argued that former commissioner Sanchez helped qualified hispanic candidates get jobs with the city, where they were under-represented.
Today he pointed out that Cortez had experience driving U-Hauls and she got further training from the city. He also pointed out that it isn't uncommon for city drivers to get in accidents, especially given how much they drive.
