Gay Student In Dispute With University

An openly-gay student at a Northwest Indiana University believes she was removed from a leadership position because of her sexual orientation.
Tia Kolasa says she’s enjoying her time at Valparaiso University, a Lutheran-based private institution.
But the 19-year-old believes the school is wrong for removing her from a seat on the Student Senate which she was elected to serve on last month.
Kolasa wanted to represent gay and lesbian students.
KOLASA: I feel like I was removed based on my sexual orientation. Last year, we tried to get a sexual orientation minority on Senate. It was hard and it ended up just being dropped.
University spokesman Reggie Syrcle says the school removed Kolasa from the seat because it’s reserved for someone representing a racial or ethnic minority. Sexual orientation is not a category.
Syrcle says if Kolasa runs for an at-large seat on the senate and wins, she’ll be able to serve with no problem.
