Cook County Board Votes to Roll Back Tax Hike
Produced by City Room on Tuesday, May 05, 2009

 AP/File |
The Cook County Board has voted to repeal last year's 1-percentage point sales tax increase. The repeal passed 12-to-3 with Commissioners William Beavers, Robert Steele and Jerry Butler voting NO. Commissioners Deborah Simms and Earleen Collins were absent. Board President Todd Stroger was visibly angry with the vote. He does have the power to veto the sales tax roll-back. Stroger has said the tax revenue is necessary for the county to provide services to its most needy residents. Twitter: Tony Peraica live commentary
Listen to WBEZ's Tony Arnold explain how the vote surprised some commissioners.

Pretty solid vote. It's called democracy, Todd. Look into it.

All I can say is thank goodness... between the sales tax and the parking meters, life in the city was becoming unbearable!
