Daley: City Council Can Have More Time on His Budget Plan

City Hall
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he’s fine with aldermen delaying a vote on his plan to cut costs.

The mayor wants the city’s non-union workers to take 17 unpaid days off.

Many aldermen balked at the idea because they say Daley routinely doesn’t give the council time to mull over big decisions.

So they delayed the vote in committee until at least tomorrow. Daley now says he’s not pushing the council.

DALEY: I think they have to have time to digest it and review it and try to figure out what we’re trying to do.

But the mayor says to balance the budget, furloughs are necessary.

DALEY: What I’m asking everybody…if everybody pitches in you won’t lay anyone off. It’s as simple as that.

Daley says he always takes unpaid days off …and he’s imploring journalists to do the same to help the financially fraught news industry.
