Illinois Governor Pat Quinn says he can not trim the state's budget any more. A non-partisan watchdog group, the Civic Federation, Monday criticized the governor for not making enough spending cuts. But Quinn says those who advocate"deep deep cuts" need to consider the consequences.
QUINN: I think we have to have a decent budget that doesn't have heartless cuts. I believe in cutting anything that's a frill or frivolous, but having said that we have to invest in the people of Illinois when it comes to their health care, their public safety, as well as their education.
Quinn says his budget plan already includes more than a billion dollars in spending cuts. To help balance the state's budget, the governor has also proposed an income tax hike. The legislature has less than three weeks before a budget deadline.
