Fitzgerald Asks Business Community to Bring Down Murder Rate

U.S. Attorney Pat Fitzgerald made an unusual public speech today but he refused to touch on some of the really hot topics that many Chicagoans want to know more about.
Fitzgerald wouldn't answer questions about the former governor, or governors, or city hiring, or terrorism investigations he's been involved with. Instead he focussed on the problem of gun violence in the city of Chicago.
FITZGERALD: There are maybe 4000 police officers on duty at any one time and the estimates of gang membership in Chicago range from 70 to 100 thousand gang members. How in the world can we incarcerate our way out of the problem when we're outnumbered that much?
Fitzgerald's office runs a program called Project Safe Neighborhoods which targets people who have been convicted of gun crimes and offers them alternatives to a life of violence. Fitzgerald told a crowd of business leaders that that's where they come in. He said he needs them to offer those alternatives by employing more ex-offenders. He says that's a key to bringing down Chicago's murder rate.
