Gary native Karl Malden Dies at 97

For the second time in less than a week, a Hollywood legend with ties to Gary, Indiana has died in Los Angeles. Academy Award-winner Karl Malden passed away yesterday at 97 years old.

Years before Michael Jackson, Karl Malden was the pride of Gary. Born in Chicago, Malden moved with his family to Gary at an early age.

He was active in basketball and drama at Gary’s Emerson High School where he graduated in 1931.

He worked in the steel mills until he left for Chicago to study acting. In 1951, Malden won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Mitch in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Malden also played Lt. Mike Stone in the 1970 TV’s drama, The Streets of San Francisco.

Over the years, Malden would return to Northwest Indiana to visit his mother and brother. Malden’s portrait hangs at the Gary Public Library and he is a member of the Steel City Hall of Fame.
