Chicago Public Schools is holding hearings this week for a new round of new schools. Most would be run by outside entities.
There are 32 proposals on the table—including two residential schools. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan touted the live-in schools when he was CEO here. Others have been proposed in the past but none has made it through CPS’s vetting process.
Leah Marshall is proposing a live-in high school in Rogers Park that would serve up to 60 students.
MARSHALL: What we see residential education doing is it allows us to accelerate students’ academics hold them accountable—and also prepare them with the habits and the life skills to be successful once they’re living independently.
Marshall will present her plan to the public tonight. Other proposed schools include Montessoris and schools with an arts focus. All are part of the Renaissance 2010 program. It’s attracted both praise and intense criticism by those who say the schools are being privatized.
