Mayor Daley defended the incremental gain in test scores. (AP/File)
Chicago Public Schools is announcing that state test scores for elementary students have inched up.
The overall gains posted by CPS students on this year’s ISAT test were slight—about 2 percentage points. Mayor Richard Daley announced the scores, and defended the incremental gain; 67.5 percent of elementary students in the district now meet or exceed standards. That includes English language learners.
DALEY: This is a growth pattern, and that’s what you have to have. This is a valid growth pattern that you see.
The preliminary test score results come on the heels of a report by a prominent
Chicago
business group. That group claims past improvements in
Chicago
’s test results have been mostly due to changes in the test—not real gains in student learning. Today, Daley acknowledged the need for tougher standards.
