Daley: Unions Must 'Come to Grips' with South Side Wal-Mart

Bookmark and Share Share

Daley spoke at a press conference Wednesday alongside representatives of the company.

He says the company has "responded" to union criticisms that it doesn't provide adequate wages and benefits.

DALEY: When they hire, you know, a couple of thousand people - you know, these are beginning jobs.  People want to just start some place.

Daley says he doesn't understand why unions oppose a Wal-Mart super-store in the Chatham neighborhood - but don't seem to care when the company builds in the suburbs.

The Wal-Mart at 83rd and Stewart streets would be Chicago's second.

But the proposal is caught up in city council.
