Stephanie Walker, Barrington // Saturday, August 08, 2009 @ 8:31 AM

I grew up in Barrington but have lived the last 7 years in Los Angeles. That's where we were impacted by the mortgage crisis. A very long saga short, our income was cut significantly and we lost a lot of value in our home... tried to sell it, tried everything to get a modification and and after 11 months and days away from foreclosure we finally sold it 'short.' Now we're living with my family (lucky to have a place to live) in the Northwest Suburbs. Facing the Mortgage Crisis is a wonderful project and I'm so glad exists here in Chicago now. I'll be following. What I've learned from all of this in short? That owning a house isn't the only way to live the American Dream... and certainly not the only road to happiness. Less is more! -Stephanie (Love in the Time of Foreclosure)

I have volunteered with groups that rehab houses in other cities. I understand the most expensive part of construction or rehab is the labor. I offer mine for free. I have searched the internet for somewhere to volunteer in Chicago and have not been able to find a good org on the north side. Can you add a "how you can help" section to your website.

Check out this video http://tumultimedia.org did about foreclosure in Chicago Lawn. The visuals will move you. We also talked to those whose houses had been foreclosed. We asked them to give advice to those in foreclosure danger. http://vimeo.com/2766847
