The protesters marched from Chicago’s Union Park to Federal Plaza. (WBEZ/Chip Mitchell)

About 2,000 immigrants marked Labor Day with a protest march in downtown Chicago. They say President Barack Obama is breaking campaign promises to push for an overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws.

As recently as last month, Obama said he intended to press for a path to citizenship for the nation’s estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants. But White House aides call such legislation unlikely this year as the president focuses on health care and the economy. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, meanwhile, has picked up the pace of deportations.

MARCHERS (in Spanish): Legalización o no reelección!

In Chicago this afternoon, the marchers said Obama is betraying them. Emma Lozano is pastor of Lincoln United Methodist, a church in the city’s Pilsen neighborhood.

LOZANO: The Latino vote helped him get in the White House, and that is not something he should take for granted because, if there is no legalization, we will not be voting for his reelection.

Lozano and other Chicagoans are helping organize a national immigrant-rights protest next month in Washington.

"The Latino vote helped him get in the White House, and that is not something he should take for granted because, if there is no legalization, we will not be voting for his reelection." Right, the Anarchist Left will be voting for Sarah Palin. Give me a break!

Illegal immigration is a very serious crisis in the U.S., and illegal hispanic aliens should be DEPORTED, not rewarded for breeching our nation's borders, breaking U.S. immigration law, and bringing demanding hispanic colonies, gangs, diseases, and CRIME to the U.S. If you agree with my views on this join our fight at www.fairus.org, The Dustin Inman Society, Numbers USA, and The Fire Coalition. Let our government know that We The People won't stand for more amnesties and rewards for those illegal aliens that have broken our nation's immigration laws!!!

Send your relatives home first, then we can talk about immigration laws.

The largest group of border breeching illegal aliens are those of hispanic descent, the largest of which are of Mexican descent. Illegal aliens break in line rudely in front of those true U.S. immigrants, those that immigrate through and by the rule of law, then come to the U.S., many with anchor babies in womb, and then demand this and demand that. Our U.S. government has failed it's people on this issue of illegal aliens in the U.S. We fight a war on terror, with borders as porous as a sponge. In the name of cheap illegal hispanic labor, the U.S. government and all the lobbies and groups that support cheap illegal foreign labor, push for open borders which is NOT in the best interest of the U.S. people, nor the U.S. nation as a whole. A war of drug cartels rages at our southern border with Mexico, and yet our President is supposed to support those that storm over that same drug war torn border and give them Citizenship????!!!!! The is just plain crazy thinking. Citizenship is something to be earned, not demanded.

To Ricky B, My relatives aren't the ones that violated immigration laws. Those laws didn't exist back then. I come from a long line of American CITIZENS.

These protesters are not the sharpest tools in the shed. Why believe Obama when 83% of Americans don't support ANY amnesty. Es muy stupido y loco!

RobinH // Wednesday, September 09, 2009 @ 2:26 AM

This protest should take place SOUTH of the border. Countries such as Mexico abuse its citizens. Rather than break U.S. laws and then stage protests on U.S. soil, illegal aliens should go home and FIGHT in their home countries.
