Quinn, Hynes At Odds Over Paying Illinois' Bills

Illinois' top Democrats seeking the party's nod for Governor next year have apparently resolved their dispute that held up payment of some state bills.

Comptroller Dan Hynes says he'll sign off on the payments, part of $40-million in contracts to promote the Illinois Lottery and tourism.

Hynes previously said Governor Pat Quinn, his political opponent in the February primary, should re-evaluate priorities in paying these bills ahead of other outstanding debts such as those for health care, schools and more. But the move brought criticism on Hynes. Several theorized he was simply trying to score political points on the issue.

While Hynes relented on cutting the checks, he points out Quinn's Administration still has no plan for dealing with a massive backlog of other bills. Both men are pushing tax increase proposals to bring in more revenue.

Meanwhile Governor Quinn called it unfair of Hynes to target previously awarded contracts and has called tourism vital to the state's economy.
