The Chicago City Council Wednesday voted to block abortion protesters from coming within 8-feet of clinic staff and patients. Alderman Ed Smith says he doesn't believe protesters should be able to prevent people from entering a building. But he has concerns about the ordinance.
SMITH: I feel that everyone has a right to move around in this country and participate in whatever venue they feel is necessary. You cannot take away those rights. Those are U.S. Constitutional rights.
Smith did not vote one way or another, but but about a dozen aldermen voted no.
The ordinance is sponsored by Alderman Vi Daley. In a statement, Alderman Daley says the so-called "medical buffer zone" strikes a balance between Freedom of Speech and "constitutionally protected health care."
