Altgeld Garden Parents Offer Solution to Violence

Bookmark and Share Share

Some parents from the Altgeld Gardens housing project on Chicago's South Side want to pull their kids out of Fenger Academy High School. This comes in the wake of the fatal beating of sophomore Derrion Albert.

Reverend Jesse Jackson of the Rainbow Push Coalition and some Altgeld Garden parents want to enroll their kids in Carver Military Academy in their own neighborhood. They say their children are unwelcome 5 miles away at Fenger and going to Carver would at least ease some tensions. But Mayor Richard Daley seemingly dismissed that plan this afternoon.

Jackson says another key to ending violence is job intervention. He says parents should be hired to patrol the community. Jackson and parents are demanding a meeting with Mayor Daley. They say they plan to pull kids out of Fenger on Monday and bus them over to Carver.
