A new study released on Monday by the Pew Charitable Trusts questions how large cities like Chicago are preparing for the 2010 Census. Thomas Ginsberg is the lead author of the report. He says Chicago is lagging behind other cities in some aspects but the city does have some advantages.
GINSBERG: Chicago is one of the ones that's the same administration from a decade ago, but others have new officials in charge, new people in the mayor's office, new mayors - that sort of thing - and they don't know how it was done before. A lot of them have brand new people, in many cases, splitting their duties. They're not getting an extra staff, so Chicago is well-positioned to cope with the lack of funding.
Ginsberg says Chicago Census takers missed more than 32,000 residents in 2000. He says missing that many people can result in a loss of federal and state money.
