The head of the union representing many Chicago Transit Authority workers says his members are bracing for layoffs. That's in response to the agency's $300-million budget shortfall.

CTA President Richard Rodriguez is blaming the bad economy for the major budget hole. He's proposed fare increases and service cuts, which would put about 1,000 union employees out of work.
Darrell Jefferson is the president of a union representing about 6,900 CTA workers. He says the employees have felt the financial crunch, just like the transit agency.
JEFFERSON: Any benefit give-back that we have earned through the years, we're not open to giving any of that back.
Jefferson says his members aren't willing to accept furlough days, either. Rodriguez says he's open to working with the unions.
