Resolution to Make Chicago a Fair Trade City

Bookmark and Share Share

October is Fair Trade Month, and over the next couple of weeks we will focus on fair trade stories and issues.

Toni Preckwinkle is Alderwoman from Chicago’s 4th Ward and she’s sponsoring a resolution to make Chicago a Fair Trade city. And Nancy Jones is Executive Director of Chicago Fair Trade and she’s on a mission to help Toni make it happen.

It seems to me just basic fairness that everyone who works should be able to have a decent life--food, clothing, shelter and recreation--as a result of that labor. Isn't this a basic tenet of all religions--to want the good for others that I want for myself? Designating Chicago as a "fair trade" city would be a move against greed and toward the greater social good we seem to have forgotten. I will be proud to live in a fair-trade city and thank Alderman Preckwinkle for sponsoring the resolution.

Go Nancy Jones! The Chicago Fair Trade Town campaign has also joined up with the Fair Trade the White House campaign that is inviting the First Lady to make the White House a “Fair Trade Home.” Over 100 companies, retailers and organizations are a part of the outreach to the White House, in addition to thousands of fair trade supporters. Everyone can add their name to the First Lady’s invitation at www.fairtradewhitehouse.com

In recognition of Fair Trade Month, we want to spread the word of Fair Trade Sports. Fair Trade Sports has joined the battle against Child Labor with their practices. Fair Trade Sports RESPECT® sports balls are certi?ed for quality by several third party agencies, including NFHS, FIFA, and SA8000. Rest assured Fair Trade Sports balls are hand stitched by adults who are paid a certified living wage and ensured healthy working conditions.
