Crisóstomo says moving out of the church will make her more effective. (Chip Mitchell/WBEZ)

A Mexican has moved out of a church on Chicago’s West Side where she lived almost two years in defiance of a deportation order.

A statement from Flor Crisóstomo says leaving Adalberto United Methodist will make her immigrant-rights activism more effective.

Crisóstomo was among almost 1,200 immigrants detained nationwide in 2006 federal raids of a pallet maker called IFCO Systems.

Another undocumented Mexican, Elvira Arellano, lived in the same church for a year with her U.S.-born son. Arellano left in 2007 for a planned speaking tour but authorities quickly arrested and deported her.

Crisóstomo is keeping a lower profile. She’s not saying whether she plans to stay in Chicago.

Flor could have been described more aptly, "a human rights activist", or "an indigenous activist", or even "Mexican activist" but the first sentence of this article sounded without rhythm, creativity, or even investigation as to how, Flor herself has chosen to describe herself. If the article was about someone else and it read, "A Whitey" or "A White person" or an "African American" or "A Black" has moved out of a church would your editor accept it? It seems like a better opening sentence would have better provided the reader with an idea of who Flor is (the who), and why this is happening now (the why).

I do hope she can help us make some changes in these immigration laws. Make them more human, more Christ like in response. YES, WE CAN!

Hector, writing that a Mexican has moved out would be no different than if she were Canadian and saying a Canadian moved out. The wording is not racist unless you make it so... What was missing was the word Illegal

Can we keep her an get rid of some of them damn gang bangers!! Sheesh, priorites folks, priorities.....

I'm right there with you Hector, c'mon WBEZ, you can do better than write offensive headlines like this...I just wrote a column exploring this, here's the link: http://www.600words.com/2009/09/when-using-term-illegal-words-do-matter-but-pick-and-choose-your-battles.html

The mexican mantra All of the laws should be enforced equally, regardless of race, religion, and/or national origin. That is with the exception of mexicans, and they should be above the law and exempt from the law. And the only purpose that a tonto gringo serves is to pay taxes to support the superior and noble mexican. Anyone who disagrees with this philosophy is Xenophobic and a Racist. It never ceases to amaze me how these illegal foreign nationals manifest all of this self immportance upon themselves. She would do better to self deport and carry on her activisim in the country of her citizenship. We are all tired of this drama and will soon put it to rest.

Julie, Dallas, TX // Tuesday, October 20, 2009 @ 1:33 PM

YES, WE CAN...get rid of shiftless, Mexican intelopers who suck the life out of our welfare programs and social services. Flor is no more. Send her back to her hovel in Mexico, anywhere but here.

How will leaving the church improve her activism? What is she doing to be active and how will keeping a low profile help? This is one of those issues that has to be seen from both sides of the spectrum. One thing is seeking refuge, another is expecting social benefits without working for them. Mexico-US immigration has become an ingrained tradition and way of life this past century but the U.S. continues to be a sovereign country itself. The issue is why this is happening, what culture the people who migrate have been brought up in. Education and anti-discrimination must be fostered at home first.

Would all the heartless commentators from the Southern and Southwest please go back to harassing undocumented immigrants in your own areas? Also please continue to ignore the actions of our Multi-National Corporations and complicit government that forced millions of Mexicans off of their land with NAFTA, federally subsidized US corn and support for illegitimate Mexican regimes (PRI and now PAN).

Chicago American, West side // Tuesday, October 20, 2009 @ 4:03 PM

Great? Now we have 20 MILLION + 1, illegal mexican 'activists' running around on our streets - ILLEGALLY? Activist? Really? Is it only our self-loathing liberals that eat this crap up? I hope so? Don't you mean illegal mexican with an undocumented criminal history living AND WORKING illegally in someone else's country, illegally and under false pretenses - collecting welfare monies, tax benefits and free medical benefits at the expense of all legal Americans? I hope our self-loathing liberals are the only one's falling for this scam since it will take real Americans and thinking Americans to get rid of this illegal and 20 million of her fellow criminals?
