County Health Cuts Hundreds of Jobs

The Cook County Health and Hospitals System plans to cut hundreds of jobs to save $60 million.
The plan is to eliminate 700 vacant positions and another 335 filled positions. A statement from the hospitals system says those cuts would mostly effect support staff like food service workers and building maintenance. It says there are some cuts in direct patient care, but only in areas where the need doesn't support the staffing levels. Some employees have already received layoff notices, and more is expected early next year.
Cook County Board President Todd Stroger says the cuts are disappointing and unacceptable. He says the action threatens core services for the uninsured and hits mostly frontline workers rather than upper management.
The county hospitals system says the cuts were announced during the previous two budget cycles and were approved by the county board.
