A long-awaited deal has been reached to overhaul the way political campaigns in Illinois are funded. Reform groups are endorsing the bill, despite failing to win a major concession from Democratic leaders.
The deal would limit the money individuals, unions, companies and special interests could give directly to campaigns. It would also cap how much political parties and leaders could give during primary elections, but includes no such limits for general elections.
Cindi Canary with the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform helped broker the deal.
CANARY: The sense was, we have moved this ball along. For the first time, there will be some limits on the money coming into Illinois' political system.
Canary says her group will fight this spring to broaden the party and leader limits to also include general elections. That proposal's included in an alternate plan being pushed Thursday by Republican Leader Tom Cross.
A vote on the deal was expected to take place Thursday night, with the Senate following on Friday.
