Congressman Danny Davis has pulled out of the race for Cook County Board president. The Chicago Democrat says he'll instead seek an eighth term in Congress.
Davis says it wasn't an easy decision to make.
DAVIS: Because I still felt that there was a possibility, notwithstanding the impediments, that I could have won.
Those impediments, Davis says, include three other candidates from the same community and political base...
DAVIS: ...which obviously would provide more of an opportunity for a more conservative candidate to be victorious.
While making the announcement, Davis insisted his comments were about ideology and not about race. DAVIS: Well, I don't think it's necessarily a matter of black candidates.
...but other African American leaders have warned that if Davis, incumbent Todd Stroger, Alderman Toni Preckwinkle and clerk of courts Dorothy Brown all run, it would boost the candidacy of Terry O'Brien, chair of the water reclamation district and the lone white candidate in the Democratic primary.
Davis says he plans to make an endorsement, but he would't say when, or for whom.
