The AMA Calls for Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

The Chicago-based American Medical Association is calling for a repeal of  the U.S. military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy on homosexuality.

Dr. Paul Wertsch is a Wisconsin delegate to the A.M.A.

He says he wrote the resolution because of a letter he received about doctor-patient confidentiality in the military.

WERTSCH: When a gay or lesbian soldier comes and talks to their doctor, psychiatrist, anyone, that if it's recorded in the record that the person is gay or lesbian, that's basis for discharge.

Wertsch says D.A.D.T. encourages dishonesty by military medical professionals and patients.

Wertsch says he also asked for an A.M.A. report about gay marriage which was released Tuesday. That study says preventing same-sex marriage limits couples' access to health insurance and tax breaks.
