Illinois Looking to Catch Up on Medicaid Payments
Produced by Tony Arnold on Saturday, November 21, 2009

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has signed into law a new program designed to cut the debt the state owes Medicaid providers. The state has been behind on its payment to hospitals for years. A spokesman for the comptroller's office says the state currently owes hospitals more than $500 million. Illinois Senator Jeff Schoenberg says the new measure will use federal money to reimburse some of the hospitals.
SCHOENBERG: Those are past bills from family care that we haven't had the resources to pay, but through this innovative financing plan, we're able to take advantage of the higher reimbursement rate.
Schoenberg says a plan to raise the cigarette tax could help the state make hundreds of millions of dollars more in Medicaid payments.
