The Chicago Board of Education met for the first time today since the death of Board President Michael Scott.

Last month, Michael Scott began what would be his final school board meeting with a moment of silence to honor the death of Fenger High School student Derrion Albert.

This month’s board meeting began with a moment of silence to remember Scott. The school board president was found in the Chicago River a week ago today. The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide. A bouquet of flowers sat in Scott’s place at the board meeting, a purple and black stole draped over his chair. At the meeting, board members, CPS officials, and community residents remembered Scott for his commitment to school kids and his respectful demeanor.

Activist Wanda Hopkins:

HOPKINS: Even if I couldn’t get everything I wanted I didn’t know it because he was so smooth and calm. He made me think that I had it even if I didn’t.

Private services and a public memorial for Scott this weekend attracted hundreds of mourners.
