The Chicago Board of Education is hiring an outside law firm to examine expenditures made by school board members—including deceased board president Michael Scott.
Scott was found in the Chicago River a week ago today, and the medical examiner has ruled his death a suicide.
Board vice president Clare Muñana warned no conclusions should be drawn from the ordering of the investigation.
MUÑANA: We’ve come to the conclusion that we need to immediately address this issue by doing a thorough review of all board spending , including those of Mr. Scott.
The move was sparked by a Chicago Tribune request for information related to board members’ expense accounts.
The district’s Inspector General is also looking into expenditures by board members.
CPS spokeswoman Monique Bond says Michael Scott was reimbursing the district for around 3,000-dollars in expenses he had charged to his school board credit card. He charged that money for a trip to Copenhagen, where he lobbied for the city’s’ Olympics bid.
