Gary, Indiana Names New Police Chief

Gary, Indiana has a new police chief. Gary Carter was sworn in today by the city’s mayor.

Carter becomes the eighth police chief to serve under Gary Mayor Rudy Clay, who took office less than four years ago.

Carter replaces former chief Reginald Harris who was demoted by the mayor a week ago.

In his 19-year career on the force, Carter has come up through the ranks, most recently serving as deputy chief. Carter says the key to reducing crime – a plague in Gary for decades – is help from residents.

CARTER: And that’s what we need throughout the whole city, for people to be involved. And, with that said we could have a better community.

Mayor Clay says a recent spike in homicides was not a factor in removing Harris. Clay says overall crime is down this year.

But in October alone 12 homicides were reported.

This year’s total is nearing the 51 murders from last year.
