The 7th District is represented by Democratic Congressman Danny Davis, who was elected in 1996. Before him, Democrat Cardiss Collins served for more than 20 years. The district includes the Loop, much of the North Michigan area and the Near North Side, Soldier Field, a few South Side neighborhoods, the mostly black area of the West Side, Oak Park, River Forest, Maywood , Broadview and Hillside. It is highly Democratic, with 83 percent of voters going for John Kerry in the 2004 election and Al Gore in 2000.
