10th District
Republican Congressman Mark Kirk was elected to the 10th District seat in 2000. Before him, Republican John Porter represented the district for more than 20 years. The 10th district comprises the North Shore suburbs, running along Lake Michigan from Waukegan in the north to Wilmette in the south. Traditionally a Republican district, it’s becoming more mixed, following a Democratic trend in the suburbs over the last decade. Al Gore won 51 percent of its votes in 2000 and John Kerry took 53 percent in 2004.
