Republican Congressman Timothy Johnson has represented the 15th District since he was elected in 2000. Before him, Republican Tom Ewing held the position since July 1991. The district is about 10,000 square miles of East Central Illinois, located along the Indiana border. It has more than 100,000 farms and also includes the cities of Champaign-Urbana and Normal. It is a traditionally Republican district. Fifty-nine percent of residents voted for President Bush in 2004 versus 41 percent for John Kerry.
