Democratic Congressman Phil Hare was elected to the 17th District in 2006. Before him, Democrat Lane Evans had served the district since 1982. The district includes Illinois’ part of the Quad Cities and all of the Mississippi border with Iowa and runs south almost to St. Louis. The 2001 redistricting vastly changed the area of district, removing northern and eastern Republican counties and adding Democratic areas. In 2004, John Kerry got 51 percent of the district’s votes compared with 48 percent for President Bush. He is running unopposed on the primary ballot.
