Democratic Senator Richard Durbin was elected to the Senate in 1996 by a 56 to 41 percent margin. He won the seat after two-term Democratic Senator Paul Simon retired. He was re-elected in 2002, by a 60 to 38 percent margin. Illinois is a traditionally Democratic “blue” state.
