Nearly nine years ago, Richard Ward found out he had an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He was operated on by a doctor at Washington University in St. Louis. A grateful Mr. Ward donated his tissue for research, but was later shocked to learn that his tissue was part of a tug of war between the doctor and the university. So, who owns our DNA once we’ve donated it for research?
