Holiday Tamale Making
For many people, the most evocative memories of Christmas are
the smells and tastes of food. Food is a focal point for many
celebrations...but Christmas is one of those times when food
really comes to the forefront. Tamales are central to the Christmas
culinary tradition for lots of Mexican families. But just as
important as the tamales is getting together to make them. Chicago
Public Radio's Tony Sarabia shares his family's annual Tamale
Day with this audio postcard.

Re-segregation in
Evanston Schools?
The nation has had some success in the nearly fifty year struggle
to integrate schools, but some school districts are now seeing
a backlash. Schools in north suburban Evanston are racially
mixed, but educators and parents are frustrated about what has
come to be known as "the achievement gap." White kids
in Evanston consistently out-perform their black and Hispanic
peers in the same schools. Chicago Public Radio's Jody Becker
reports on a push to open a school to serve some of Evanston's
Black elementary school students.

lobbyists. Governor Thompson spoke to Carlos Hernandez-Gomez
about his appointment to the 9/11 panel. Thompson began by describing

Small Business Health
Care
As health insurance premiums continue to rise, many working
poor just can't afford coverage. The lack of a national consensus
over how to make health coverage available to the uninsured
is prompting local communites to create innovative plans to
insure employees. In Rockford, Illinois, one such program would
help small businesses employers to extend coverage to the uninsured.
Chicago Public Radio's Jay Field reports.

Muslims give a portion of their wealth to the needy. Many choose
to do their annual giving during the month of Ramadan. Some
people are giving Zakat differently this year, as Catrin Einhorn
reports.
