Audio Holiday Tamale Making
For many people, the most evocative memories of Christmas are the smells and tastes of food. Food is a focal point for many celebrations...but Christmas is one of those times when food really comes to the forefront. Tamales are central to the Christmas culinary tradition for lots of Mexican families. But just as important as the tamales is getting together to make them. Chicago Public Radio's Tony Sarabia shares his family's annual Tamale Day with this audio postcard.

Audio Investigation moves closer to George Ryan
Federal prosecutors are moving full speed ahead in their investigation into the licenses-for-bribes scandal. The U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago filed new papers last night that indicate the investigation is moving ever closer to Illinois Governor George Ryan. Chicago Public Radio's Carlos Hernandez-Gomez has more.

Audio Re-segregation in Evanston Schools?
The nation has had some success in the nearly fifty year struggle to integrate schools, but some school districts are now seeing a backlash. Schools in north suburban Evanston are racially mixed, but educators and parents are frustrated about what has come to be known as "the achievement gap." White kids in Evanston consistently out-perform their black and Hispanic peers in the same schools. Chicago Public Radio's Jody Becker reports on a push to open a school to serve some of Evanston's Black elementary school students.

Audio Thompson on 9-11 Panel
Former Illinois Governor James R. Thompson will sit on President Bush's commission looking into the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Thompson served from 1977 until 1991, making him the state's longest-serving chief executive. He's now chairman of the law firm of Winston & Strawn and is considered one of the state's most powerful lobbyists. Governor Thompson spoke to Carlos Hernandez-Gomez about his appointment to the 9/11 panel. Thompson began by describing how he was chosen.

Audio Small Business Health Care
As health insurance premiums continue to rise, many working poor just can't afford coverage. The lack of a national consensus over how to make health coverage available to the uninsured is prompting local communites to create innovative plans to insure employees. In Rockford, Illinois, one such program would help small businesses employers to extend coverage to the uninsured. Chicago Public Radio's Jay Field reports.

One of the five major tenets of Islam, Zakat, requires that Muslims give a portion of their wealth to the needy. Many choose to do their annual giving during the month of Ramadan. Some people are giving Zakat differently this year, as Catrin Einhorn reports.
