Peignot...and your Mary Tyler Moore

Liberty Bank at Fullerton & Kedzie Milwaukee caught my eye a day or two ago--and it wasn't the architecture.

It was the typeface above. Rounded, modern, kinda 1970s funky. Kinda like:

Turns out the typeface predates the 1970s and the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

It's called Peignot, a font developed by Adolphe Mouron Cassandre in 1937 while working with the Deberny Peignot Foundry in France. It was used for advertising posters of the time. Peignot fell out of favor, but found a second life in the late 1960s and 1970s.‚  You can see it here too:
