The 3 @ 3: Regulating online dating, freeing Tibet and the revival of the doughnut

March 29, 2012

Today on The 3 @ 3, our daily culture news/panel consists of Vocalo's MorningAMP hosts Brian Babylon and Molly Adams. They each join Steve in bringing a conversation topic to the table:

Steve Edwards: The Illinois Senate passed legislation yesterday requiring online dating sites to say whether they perform criminal background checks on prospective members – and would have to advertise such on the site. Legislation now goes to the House.  Wait, that hasn’t been in play before? Also serious issues of stigma for ex-offenders, etc.  What else should these sites be telling us, really? And what can we trust on online profiles anyway? What effect would more disclosure have on the way people approach sites? On dating life?

Brian Babylon: A possible resurgence of the Free Tibet movement? In trying to stop news of the more than 30 self-immolations of Tibetan monks and students that have occurred in the past year (yeah, 30. 22 deaths.), Chinese authorities have made it a priority to delete people's cellphone photos and videos following the aftermath of these horrifying suicidal protests of helplessness. However on Monday, photos of the death of Tibetan Jamphel Yeshi made it to the Internet when he set himself on fire in Delhi while Hu Jintao was visiting.

Molly Adams: Doughnuts are the new cupcakes and I could not be happier! I am a fat person trapped in a skinny person's body and OMG DONUTS! First the Doughnut Vault opened, bringing back the old school chestnuts, old-fashioned, gingerbreads, and mocha, along with some more experimental flavors like birthday cake. Bonus old school-ness: one dollar coffee! Now, Glazed and Infused is opening in the back of Francesca's Forno, with a service window facing the Damen Blue Line. They look awesome, but I am not down with all these over the top gourmet donuts they will be serving alongside the classics. We don't need creme brulee vanilla bean infused bacon crumble decadence! just make a solid cinnamon sugar cake donut and we're good to go.
