The Don't Miss List: 'Vincent River' and 'Dance(volve)'

by Laura Molzahn | Jan. 26, 2012

Theatre Y remounts its acclaimed production of Phillip Ridley’s two-hander Vincent River (acclaimed by a lot of people, not just me) one night only, this Friday at 8 PM. It’s a benefit for the company’s trip to NYC, where Theatre Y is restaging Andras Visky’s I Killed My Mother—a cheery little show about the fate of Romanian orphans, starring artistic director Melissa Hawkins—this month at La Mama. Benefit tickets are just $20, and you’ll catch a great show.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s company showcase, Danc(e)volve,” continues at the MCA Thursday through Sunday with two programs of new works by dancers in HSDC and Hubbard Street 2. I was bowled over last weekend by the energy and creativity of these young and often inexperienced in-house choreographers, who range in age from 19 to 36. Alejandro Cerrudo’s intensely moving duet Never Was anchors both lineups. Of course the HSDC dancers are fabulous, but the less familiar HS2 dancers are a revelation: strong, sexy, expressive.
