Afternoon Shift

About

A daily conversation about news, culture and ideas.

Apr. 05, 2012

On Thursday's show we look at the hopeless love affair many have with sports. Some are so hopelessly smitten that they're launching a new outlet for long form sports journalism. They'll explain themselves on today's show. Others are blindly optimistic about Chicago's North Side baseball team and are celebrating opening day.

Natalie Moore will join the show to talk about CHA residents participating in the Section 8 program. Some say their connections with old neighborhoods are bringing crime into their new communities. A new study examines that accusation.

Americans are often accused of having a love affair with cars. If they weren't helpless in their affection, they'd probably ditch their cars during Chicago's summer construction season. WBEZ Traffic reporter Sarah Jindra will join the show to give drivers a fighting chance against the traffic.

Finally biological anthropologist Helen Fisher gets into the science of love. She'll take your calls and try to explain why sometimes we feel so helpless, helpless, helpless.
