A suitor from abroad is highly desirable for some Indian women. But such offers can be made under false pretenses, making the practice rife with abuse. Suitors steal dowry money, leave their new wives stranded foreign countries — and in the most severe cases — force their brides into slavery or human trafficking. Neha Gill and Dr. Ranjana Kumari explain the horrifying practice and discuss what can be done to stop it.

Then, in our Global Activism segment, we look at Alternative Gifts International. The fundraising non-profit has worked for 26 years to help people choose an alternative to consumerism. By gifting to world poverty causes instead of buying more traditional gifts, they say supporters can use their energy and dollars to fight poverty and promote social justice.
