Given their high-profile success, it's inevitable that any two-person, guitar/drums duo arriving on the scene these days draws comparisons to the White Stripes and the Black Keys, so in what may be an effort to head that off at the pass, Chicago's Black Birdies drop the former name as the first on their list of influences (though the second is, oddly, missing).

The fascinating "DuSable to Obama: Chicago's Black Metropolis," documentary that's been airing this month on WTTW--catch it if you have not seen it--shows us the black experience in Chicago is substantially fuller, broader and deeper than many of us have been taught, or imagined.
While in Toronto last weekend, my pals and I made a startling discovery. I was going to write it up, but my girlfriend, Megan Bayles, author of the summer-drinks-only blog, Back Deck cocktails seemed much more appropriate. Thus I figured a little guest blogging was in order.
