This event will be recorded for WBEZ’s Chicago Amplified.

Tourists marvel at it, but Chicagoans just smile.  In the north Loop area sometimes when the wind is blowing just right, the air is filled with the delicious, delightful aroma of chocolate.  It’s not magic, it’s simply Blommer Chocolate Company cranking up its production line and brightening everyone’s mood.

Illinois Science Council is partnering with the Notebaert Nature Museum to offer one of our most popular programs about the chemistry of stuff we care about (and perhaps keep a secret stash of in our desk drawer).  This unique workshop on the Chemistry of Chocolate will be led by Dr. Shelby Hatch, chemistry faculty at Northwestern University, along with the Melissa Tisoncik, R&D Specialist with Blommer Chocolate Company.

This time it will be part of the “Nature on Tap” adults-only program at the museum’s beautiful space in Lincoln Park. In addition to the chocolate workshop, the ticket price includes: entrance to the Nature Museum from 6-9pm, access to the new exhibit “Food: The Nature of Eating,” live animal interactions, live music and a cash bar featuring local craft beers.

The Butterfly Haven will be open from 6-8pm. Tickets are $35 but Nature Museum members receive $10 off ticket price by entering “MuseumMember” as the promo code (users of the discount code will be checked against Museum’s member list).

Get your tickets now at ChemistryofChocolate.Eventbrite.com.  Space is very limited! No science prerequisites necessary but you must be 21 or older.

Whether you consider it a daily necessity, an indulgence, or your drug of choice, chocolate is a marvel.  You love it.  But to fully appreciate it you should understand its amazing chemical properties.  Here is your rare chance to learn more about your beloved sweet treat.
