Italian Women Strike Back
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi recently insulted a female politician, saying she was more beautiful than intelligent. We talk with Italian feminist Lorella Zanardo, a consultant who works on diversity and gender issues. She says the images of women on television are a big part of the problem. Lorella recently wrote and directed the documentary film Women’s Bodies, which examines the way women are portrayed on Italian television. You can watch the English version of the documentary here.

I listened to the broadcast this afternoon and watched the documentary this evening and found that Ms. Zanardo almost understates her case. I went through a whole range of feelings that included a strange sort of giddiness ultimately to a sulleness that we would legitamize such base thoughts, words and actions for general public consumption. I think it was genius that Ms. Zanardo was able to use these very images to point out the underlying depravity.
